French president and Trump don't alway see eye to eye

The secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, also reacted to a possible agreement between Europe and the United States about the future of the nuclear deal.

In an apparent reference to his friendly meetings this week with Trump, he said, "It can remind you of something".

French President Emmanuel Macron has drawn sharp contrasts with President Donald Trump's worldview during a speech to the US Congress. Under US law, the current Iran deal requires the president to regularly verify to Congress that Iran is in compliance with the deal - and the next deadline for verification is May 12. He reserved particular scorn for the United States president, who has threatened to restore USA sanctions next month unless what he sees as severe flaws of the deal are fixed.

"President Macron... spoke of the need for supplementary agreements".

The disagreement threatens to plunge transatlantic relations to their lowest point since the Iraq war, despite the lavish welcome Trump put on for Macron's state visit. "He is very predictable".

In his speech, Macron also made a pointed criticism of "isolationism, withdrawal and isolationism", adding that the United States "invented multilateralism".

Brian Hook, the lead U.S. negotiator with the three European nations trying to keep Trump in the deal before his self-imposed May 12 deadline, told National Public Radio in Washington that "we're not there yet, but we've made some progress".

However, Britain and its European allies France and Germany argue that the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is working and are seeking ways to address Trump's concerns about Iran's wider activity without ditching the nuclear deal.

He expressed doubt that Trump would stay in the nuclear deal and warned the West not to "repeat past mistakes" in the Middle East.

"There is one deal existing, it's working, it needs to be preserved", said European Union diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini.

PRESIDENT Hassan Rouhani rejected any hopes of rewriting a nuclear deal with world powers yesterday, after the leaders of the United States and France called for a new pact covering Teheran's missile programme and regional interventions.

"We wrote these rules. It can be tempting to us as a temporary remedy to our fears", Mr Macron said.

"I always said there is the JCPOA but we needed to add three pillars post 2025".

"Everybody said 'This guy is going to get us into nuclear war, ' but let me tell you, the nuclear war would have happened if you had weak people".

Minister of Intelligence Israel Katz says Wednesday he was encouraged by President Donald Trump's stern threat to Iran during his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron the day before.

Trump sees three defects in the 2015 deal: a failure to address Iran's ballistic missile program; the terms under which global inspectors can visit suspect Iranian nuclear sites; and "sunset" clauses under which key limits on the Iranian nuclear program start to expire after 10 years.

Trump has threatened to tear up worldwide trade deals, scorns the United Nations, accuses U.S. allies of not pulling their weight, walked away from Paris climate accord and hates dealing with transnational bodies like the European Union. "After yesterday's comments, you get the impression that Trump is more amenable now than ever before to the kind of fix Macron is proposing", he told AFP.

But in an address to the US Congress on Wednesday, Macron appealed to the country's leaders to preserve the Iran deal and remain part of the global community, taking a clear jab at Trump's "America First" agenda.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is expected to press the European case again when she visits Washington on Friday.
