WhatsApp to raise minimum age limit to 16 in EU

WhatsApp users in Europe will now have to be at least 16 years of age to use the platform.

However it is unclear at this stage how the Facebook owned company intends to enforce this increasing of the age limit.

WhatsApp will also be allowing all users to download a report detailing the data it holds on them as part of its new terms of service. Most services have a policy of not letting people sign up if they're under 13, but WhatsApp is taking things a step further ahead of the GDPR introduction next month.

"Remember, everyone around the world can use the controls we highlight to limit the information we collect about you or how we use it, and change the settings at any time", Kieran wrote.

But like its parent company Facebook doesn't seem to be adopting GDPR-level privacy regulations outside the EU, WhatsApp seemingly has no plans to change the minimum age threshold elsewhere.

WhatsApp, founded in 2009, has come under pressure in Europe for its end-to-end encrypted messaging system and its plan to share more data with Facebook.

Asset managers grappling with new European Union data privacy rules have been turning to the insurance sector to help limit the fallout from business-crippling cyber attacks.

WhatsApp suspended the change in Europe after widespread regulatory scrutiny.

It is asking them to nominate a parent or guardian to give permission for them to share information on the platform, otherwise, they will not see a fully personalized version of the social media platform. The rules are created to bolster existing data privacy rules and give individuals more say over how their personal information is used.

According to GDPR, the Europeans can ask the social media platforms to delete their personal data available with them.

It would also allow consumers the right to opt out and keep their information private by disabling data tracking and collection, and mandate that users be notified of a privacy violation within 72 hours. Meanwhile Twitter announced in a blog post that it has updated its privacy policy to make the terms simpler to its users.
