The current imbroglio has to do with Facebook becoming too aggressive in the personal data it collects - for example, through some apps it logs users' text and cellphone histories.
Facebook says it can collect personal data as many websites and apps use the social networking giant's services to make their content and ads more engaging and relevant.
In the post, Facebook's Product Management Director, David Baser, set himself up to answer questions that were neither hard nor related to the most pressing issues facing the company, much like the testimony given by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg last week.
"When you visit a site or app that uses our services, we receive information even if you're logged out or don't have a Facebook account".
Like Google - which provides all of us with remarkable search, email and other services free - Facebook turned toselling targeted adsto businesses who a decade ago mostly hawked their wares through broadcast and print media.
And Facebook and many other purveyors of advertising on the web have perfected strategies to keep us logged on longer and come back more often.
"Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn all have similar Like and Share buttons to help people share things on their services". As you know, the upcoming European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will significantly restrict the use of such sensitive categories of personal data. "This can help with things like saving items in your shopping cart", Baser explained. Facebook is now alerting users with two notifications: one if you were affected and one if you weren't. The post further lists the services that are used by these third party apps and websites.

Suspicious pages included Facebook pages with little to no information about who is behind them, pages that have been taken down and ones that have had little activity since Election Day 2016. Americans are asking for a public dialogue about the purposes for which Facebook uses their personal data; but a meaningful conversation can not happen until users also understand the sources from which their data is gleaned and the specific data - which characteristics, attributes, labels, or categories of data points - are being collected and utilized.
Baser saidFacebook doesn't sell that data but only uses it to cater content to you.
"Going forward, we're going to address this by verifying the identity of every single advertiser who's running political or issue-oriented ads to make it so that foreign actors or people trying to spoof their identity or say that they're someone that they're not can not run political ads or run large pages", said Zuckerberg during his Congressional testimony. According to him, "If someone tries to log into your account using an IP address from a different country, we might ask some questions to verify if it's you". "Or if a browser has visited hundreds of sites in the last five minutes, that's a sign the device might be a bot".
"'Whether it's information from apps and websites or information you share with other people on Facebook, we want to put you in control - and be transparent about what information Facebook has and how it is used". If they do, we'll show them ads from the same advertisers that are targeting them on Facebook.
