Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on world powers to stop "arms wrestling" on Syria amid an unprecedented upsurge of tension between the United States and Russian Federation over an alleged chemical attack near the Syrian capital earlier this month.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Turkey is anxious by the "arm wrestling" of world powers over Syria, adding he will discuss with Russian President Vladimir Putin how to stop chemical attacks in the country. "The two leaders agreed to maintain close contact relative to the current situation", the White house said, without going into details.

The presidents exchanged views following a suspected chemical attack during the weekend in Douma, a Syrian town northeast of capital Damascus, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

Trump also blamed Russian Federation for being partners with "a gas killing animal", referring to Syria's Bashar al-Assad.

In recent months, however, Ankara has been working closely with Moscow, a major ally of the Assad government, on Syrian issues.

Mr Erdogan said he would speak to Russian despot Vladimir Putin later today about the crisis.

According to Aksoy, the attack that killed dozens and affected 500 others constitutes a crime against humanity and the perpetrators need to be punished to prevent similar attacks in the future.

The spokesman added that Turkey was among the sponsors of the draft resolution. If there's any Russian (or Iranian or North Korean) dense enough to still keep assets in these United States, maybe they don't really care about them.

In an interview Tuesday night ahead of Trump's series of tweets-which insisted that poor relations between Russia and the USA are largely due to special counsel Robert Mueller's collusion probe-Russian ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin warned that any us missiles fired at Syria will be "downed" along with "the sources from which the missiles were fired".

On January 20, Turkey, together with the Free Syrian Army opposition forces, launched Operation Olive Branch in Afrin. He also slammed those who support "bloody Assad regime" and YPG/PKK terrorist organizations.
