President Trump: US strikes on Syria... 'now underway'

Gen. Dunford on Syria Airstrikes: We Did Not Coordinate With Russians or Pre-Notify Them President Trump: US strikes on Syria... 'now underway'

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told lawmakers he believes a chemical weapons attack occurred in Syria last weekend, but the Trump administration was still assessing conclusive evidence and deciding how to respond, including, whether to attack Syria with US military strikes, as of Thursday. He authorized a barrage of Tomahawk cruise missiles to hit a single Syrian airfield in April 2017 in retaliation for Assad's use of sarin gas against civilians.

The strikes were in response to the chemical attack in Syria last week against civilians, and to deter Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad from doing it again.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis addressed the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee this week, and he had fierce words regarding the U.S.' current affairs in the Middle East and its stance on the growing conflict in Syria.

"As each day goes by, as you know it's a non-persistent gas, so it becomes more and more hard to confirm it", he said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) told Reuters a second research facility was also struck in Damascus, in addition to a third in the Homs area, and five military bases and depots used by elite army divisions in the Mezzeh area of Damascus.

Trump says he has asked US partners "to take greater responsibility for securing their home region, including contributing large amounts of money for the resources, equipment and all of the anti-ISIS effort".

Mattis is asking that "accountable nations" participate condemning the Assad regime.

"Macron says in a statement Saturday that France's "red line has been crossed" after a suspected chemical attack last week in the Syrian town of Douma".

Last year, the US launched missile strikes on a Syrian air base in response to a sarin gas attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun.

Last year, the United States only waged strikes on Syria after determining that more deadly sarin gas was used and some USA media had reported that Washington was confident Assad had also used sarin on April 7.

He said a chemical attack had likely occurred and hoped inspectors would be in place within a week to prove it.

President Donald Trump is warning Russian Federation and Iran about their association with Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad's government, as he announces the launch of retaliatory strikes after an apparent chemical weapons attack last week.

Dunford provided few details on the equipment used to carry out the strike Friday, citing operational security, but said U.S., British and French naval and air force equipment were involved in the operation.

The ambassador said that Russian specialists went to Douma to inspect the situation, but could not find any evidence of a chemical attack: "Locals were interviewed about the cessation of resistance to the fighters".

Mattis said the USA was convinced that Syria used chlorine gas on its citizens, possibly even sarin gas, which has been used in the past.

Will there be more strikes? Gen Dunford confirmed the wave of strikes had ended.

What has the reaction been? But the damage was limited, and a defiant Assad returned to episodic use of chlorine and perhaps other chemicals.

Mattis called these a "one-time shot" and said "this wave of airstrikes is over".

"The only reason Assad is still in power is because of the Russians regrettable vetos in the [United Nations] and the Russian and Iranian military".
