Justice for Scooter Libby

Trump is suddenly very concerned about Scooter Libby. Here's why. Scooter Libby Aside, Presidential Pardons Are Good and Trump Should Issue Even More of Them

President Donald Trump issued out a pardon for former George W. Bush administration official Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

There is another parallel with this whole political maneuver, although it was denied on Friday by White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders. "I am grateful today that President Trump righted this wrong by issuing a full pardon to Scooter", Cheney said in a statement. When former federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald was appointed to investigate that unlawful disclosure, he compounded his offense by lying to FBI agents working for the special counsel. Fitzgerald is a longtime friend and colleague of James Comey, the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director whose new memoir paints a scathing portrait of Trump's character and conduct in office.

The statement said Trump believed Libby was worthy of a pardon because before his conviction he served the country for more than a decade at the State Department, Defence Department and White House.

Libby's 30 month prison sentence was commuted by then-President George W. Bush, but he did not pardon him.

"I chose to go back and correct the record in my own book, which I did, and when Scooter Libby was given his law license back a year and a half ago, the judge specifically cited my testimony, the recantation of my testimony, as one of the factors in his decision".

Trump has also made clear that he thinks Mueller's investigation into his campaign's possible collusion with Russian Federation is unfair.

The move would mark the third pardon by Trump. Pardoning Libby certainly seems like one way for Trump to discreetly assure any supporters touched by the Mueller investigation that he will take care of them in the long run-if they cover for the president. Mr. Libby, prosecutors said, lied about where he learned of her identity and what he discussed with reporters.

Trump knows the attorneys and had sought to add them to his legal team in the Russian investigation, but it was determined diGenova and Toensing had conflicts of interest that would prevent them from joining.

"Suffice to say, he's thrilled", she said of Libby, who she said had just gotten out of an MRI. "It's very clear that this is a message he is sending that you can commit crimes against national security and you will be pardoned".

Trump has rarely used his presidential power to pardon, but last August granted clemency to Joe Arpaio, a controversial Arizona sheriff who had been a longtime Trump ally and campaign-trail companion. The Court agreed with the District of Columbia Disciplinary Counsel, who stated that Mr. Libby had presented "credible evidence" in support of his innocence, including evidence that a key prosecution witness had 'changed her recollection of the events in question'. His record since his conviction is similarly unblemished, and he continues to be held in high regard by his colleagues and peers.

Former Ambassador Joseph Wilson called Trump a "vile and despicable individual".
