Google is preparing to give Gmail a makeover, but the revamp may include more than just new layouts. In addition, the sender is given the option to set an expiration time/date for the email ranging from hours to years.
Instead, Gmailsends the recipient a dummy email with a hyperlink to the actual self-expiring message, which is what actually disappears when time expires.
The new version of Gmail will also show a lock icon which would be placed in the compose box in order to activate the Confidential Mode. Before sending an email, users will be able to specify a time frame post which, the email will be deleted from the recipient's inbox.
A Google spokesperson said: 'We work hard to comply with the Right to be Forgotten, but we take great care not to remove search results that are in the public interest and will defend the public's right to access lawful information. The report describes that on the recipient's side, the person used the existing version of Gmail and received a link to view the confidential email.
And you'll be able to put an extra layer of security on particularly sensitive emails - you can require the recipient to confirm their identity with a passcode (sent to their phone), or to log in a second time, before viewing the content. However, there is one big concern surrounding the new feature which is - although Google does not allow printing, copying, or pasting of the email content there are no measures whatsoever to prevent the receiver from screenshotting the email.
Additionally, when viewing a confidential email, Google reportedly disables the ability to copy or print anything in the email - though as the images in TechCrunch's story prove, there's nothing stopping someone from taking a screenshot or even a picture with a nearby smartphone. The company might showcase new Gmail features at the Google I/O 2018, which will commence on the 8th of May.
Mashable said that Google has left no hints as to what the update will mean for your personal email use, though. It is unclear if the "confidential" expiring mails will be end-to-end encrypted. If you access it from your email, it's mostly a simple check list with due dates.
