Teenager Eileen Cikamatana became the first Fijian woman to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal as the island nations dominated.

Makwala, who reached the 200 final at last year's world championships days after being refused entry to the stadium for the 400 final because of quarantine restrictions amid a viral outbreak, is targeting his first medal at a major meet.

Blake will feel similarly frustrated and the pre-race favourite said of his ragged performance: "I was stumbling all the way and I didn't recover from it".

His progress was delayed by a string of injuries and he was faced with a rising tide of young rivals such as Canada's Andre de Grasse and American Christian Coleman, plus the return of Justin Gatlin.

Bolt, who retired previous year with eight Olympic golds including two 4x100 relay titles shared with Blake, tweeted his congratulations to his teammate and Simbine.

Jamaica was also denied in the women's 100, with Trinidad and Tobago's Michelle-Lee Ahye taking the gold in 11.14, holding off Blake's teammate Christania Williams (11.21) and third-placed Gayon Evans.

"Congrats @AkaniSimbine #Gold", the eight-time Olympic champion tweeted.

"Chasing like that never works".

Simbine was the talk of the athletics world after he stormed to victory out of Lane 7 in a time of 10:03. Stella Chesang fought off Kenya's Stacy Ndiwa to take the 10,000m gold for Uganda and win her maiden Commonwealth medal.

"The 100m is an event of who's got the biggest ego and who can handle the ego the best".

Simbine said: "I wasn't focused on him (Blake), I was focused on myself and making sure I got out fast and that I got to the 50m as quickly as I could. I just focused on myself".

They went down 18-16 to defending world champions New Zealand in their gold-silver match early on Monday.

The 23-year-old had trailed Robinson from the first round, after the Kiwi broke Arnold's previous world record with a 43.32m opener.

Wales' Hollie Arnold won the F56 javelin with a world record throw of 44.43m.

"I am quite happy with the performance, for a couple of years I've been working hard but I haven't been in finals like Akani", Bruintjies said.

"Holly really pushed me and the best feature is that we really push each other head to head".

South Africa's Caster Semenya looked in imperious form as she qualified fastest for Tuesday's 1500m final. I was supposed to take this very easily. "He said: 'If you don't win there is going to be problems'".

England's Jessica Judd and Katie Snowdon joined her with Wales' Melissa Courtney and Scotland's Eilish McColgan and Stephanie Twell.
