U.S. companies seen as more likely to be hit by trade tensions with China were among the biggest drags on the Dow, including Boeing, down 3.1 per cent.
U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gained to settle at 63.42 dollars, a 2.2 per cent gain, its largest daily percentage rise since March 23.
The Dow slid 218.55 points or 0.9 percent to 24,189.45, the Nasdaq dipped 25.27 points or 0.4 percent to 7,069.03 and the S&P 500 fell 14.68 points or 0.6 percent to 2,642.19.
The so-called FANG stocks - Facebook Inc, Amazon.com, Netflix Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google - were up between 1 percent and 2.6 percent ahead of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's testimony before USA lawmakers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
