Michael Goolaerts became a professional rider in 2014 at the age of 20 and Sunday marked his first appearance at the renowned Paris-Roubaix race.

World champion Peter Sagan won the 2018 edition in a sprint finish with Silvan Dillier.

The BBC says Goolaerts was found unconscious by race doctors after falling on the second set of cobbles during the one-day classic in northern France.

Goolaerts' team said the 23-year-old died in a Lille hospital where he had been taken by helicopter from the one-day classic on Sunday.

"No update on Michael Goolaerts yet", the team said in a statement.

David Lappartient, president of the Union Cycliste Internationale, expressed the organisation's sadness at the tragic news. "We share their huge sadness", Mr Lappartient wrote on Twitter. He was quickly attended by a medical team and appeared to receive CPR.

Sagan, the three-time world champion from Slovakia, and Dillier rode together at the front for the last 25 kilometres (15.5 miles).

According to the post-race Decision of the Commissaire's Jury sheet, both riders have been fined for breaking UCI race regulation article 12.1.040/23, which states that no unauthorised refreshment should be taken in the final 20km of a race.
