An influential liberal organization is backing Cynthia Nixon over incumbent Andrew Cuomo in the race for NY governor.

In January, Cuomo, who is against legalizing recreational marijuana, announced a study that would evaluate the possible effects of marijuana legalization in nearby states, like New Jersey, on NY.

She also believes regulating marijuana would generate "hundreds of millions of dollars" in tax revenue for NY and boost the state's agricultural sector.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo advanced legislation to ban employers, both private and public, from asking about salary history across the state.

Cuomo, during an unrelated event in Long Island Wednesday, disputed Nixon's claim, noting that in January he announced plans to have the state Health Department study the health and economic health impacts of legalizing marijuana.

Nine states and the District of Columbia have legalized the recreational use of marijuana. The victor of the Democratic primary will move forward to the general election in November to hold the state of New York's highest elected office.

Nixon went on to say that 80% of people arrested for consuming marijuana in NY state are black and Latino, although white New Yorkers use marijuana at roughly the same rates.

The agenda is popular on both sides of the political spectrum: 64% percent of Americans want to see marijuana legalized, according to a recent Gallup poll. 80% of New Yorkers who are arrested for using marijuana are black or Latino, she writes, adding that, "The reality is that for white people, marijuana has effectively been legal for years".

"We now have states that have legalized marijuana". "You have MA, you have New Jersey talking about it - that would be a fundamentally different situation for the state of NY".

Nixon may not succeed in her primary challenge against Cuomo, but her platform's popularity among progressives may wind up shifting Cuomo on the issue of marijuana legalization.

For his part, de Blasio said he was a bit hesitant.

A representative for Nixon did not immediately respond to request for comment.

In a recent interview with The Breakfast Club, de Blasio doubled down on his opposition to legalization, but First Lady Chirlane McCray said she supports it, although she cautioned that it "should be highly regulated".

"I think we're actually ahead on it", he maintained.
