A federal court in Texas has ordered Apple to pay $502.6 million United States dollars to VirnetX Holding Corp over a patent dispute that has been reportedly going on for eight years.

VirnetX has been gunning for Apple since 2010 when it filed three lawsuits alleging that its FaceTime, VPN on Demand and iMessage features infringed on owned patents.

Apple will now have to pay $502.6 million in damages.

Incidentally, in the fourth quarter of previous year, the U.S. District Court had ordered Apple Inc.to pay almost Dollars 439.

The case began way back in 2012 with four of VirnetX's patents (1, 2, 3, 4), which had originated at a company called Science Applications International Corporation, or SAIC. While there will nearly certainly be jubilation at the ruling, Apple has a history of appealing. The company's stock rose 44 percent today on news of the federal ruling in its favor, Bloomberg says. Even so, there was still a major difference there, Apple and Samsung both use their patents in products that they make and sell, while VirtnetX focuses on court cases to bring in revenue. The Patent Trial and Appeal Board has said the patents are invalid, in cases that are now before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington.

Kendall Larsen, CEO of VirnetX, said the damages, which were based on sales of more than 400 million Apple devices, were "fair".

Apple has been dealt what may be a short-lived blow in a long-fought battle with VirnetX.

The Patent Trial and Appeal Board has ruled the patents invalid, which VirnetX is appealing.
