Cambridge Analytica says it only ever received data on 30 million users.

Private data of over 5.6 lakh Indian Facebook users was also compromised by a private marketing firm that later sold the personal details acquired through a quiz app to Cambridge Analytica.

She told NBC's "Today" show that Facebook is now undertaking that audit.

Facebook's second in command Sheryl Sandberg said Friday that users wanting to opt out of having their data used by advertisers will have to pay for that assurance.

The social network is facing mounting pressure over data breach scandal. Hearings over the issue are scheduled in the US, and the European Union is considering what actions to take against the company.

Zuckerberg said the move comes after reviewing how the site was leveraged by Russian trolls during the 2016 US election - and pointed to "important" elections, including the USA midterm elections, coming later this year.

"Today's updates are created to prevent future abuse in elections and to help ensure you have the information that you need to assess political and issue ads, as well as content on Pages".

In reply to a comment on his post, Zuckerberg stated, "Yes - 2018 has important elections across the US, Mexico, India, Brazil, Pakistan, Hungary and many other countries".

It will require people who manage large pages to be verified as well. The company did not specify what number of followers would trigger the requirement. "But they will make it a lot harder for anyone to do what the Russians did during the 2016 election and use fake accounts and pages to run ads".

Weeks after it suspended United Kingdom data firm Cambridge Analytica, Facebook has prevented Canadian data firm AggregateIQ from using its platform, according to the National Observer, pending an investigation after it reports connected the two amidst the ongoing privacy scandal that has shaken the social media company. However, this also means that the recipient is aware of the nature of the messages and can react accordingly.

A key for question for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg when he testifies before Congress next week about the Cambridge Analytica data scandal is likely to be how long the company's executives were aware of the issue before it was publicly disclosed. Unlike Zuck, the average Facebook user does not have a limited retention period for their messages. Finally, it declined to say whether messages will disappear automatically as Zuckerberg's did or via a user-set timer. The company apologized for not doing so sooner.

Facebook has experienced heavy criticism this year over its privacy failings.
