The Israeli military said on Thursday that it will not allow a repeat of last week's violent confrontations along the Israel-Gaza border and accused Hamas of planning terror attacks under the cover of protests.

Hamas leaders billed the final protest, set for May 15, as the "Great March of Return" of Palestinian refugees and their descendants, implying they would try to enter Israel. The two groups advocate the destruction of Israel, which along with the West, regards them as terrorist organisations.

In one instance, a pair of gunmen approached the border, and the army said protesters tried to plant explosives along the fence in several instances. Land Day is held in remembrance of an incident in which Israeli forces fatally shot six Palestinians on March 30, 1976, as the Palestinians were protesting Israeli land seizures.

Nuriel explained that Israeli security forces had to prevent people from breaching, damaging or infiltrating the fence to protect Israel's security.

"It's also our right to look for suitable ways to force Israel to release Palestinian prisoners, " he added. Israel has also used rubber bullets and tear gas on Palestinian protesters.

Some of the protesters have rolled burning tires, thrown rocks and reportedly attempted to damage the border fence.

An Israeli airstrike on the Gaza border killed a Palestinian man on Thursday morning, the health ministry in the enclave said, bringing the death toll to 19.

Israeli defense minister, Avigdor Lieberman, said on Thursday that "open-fire rules for the Gaza border will remain unchanged".

For Hamas, it's perhaps the last chance to break a border blockade enforced by Israel and Egypt since 2007, without having to succumb to demands that it disarm. Gen. Ronen Manelis, an Israel army spokesman.

Nuriel further observed that the majority of those killed during last week's demonstrations were known terrorist with affiliations to Palestinian terrorist groups, such as Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, more than 1,500 Palestinian demonstrators have been injured - many seriously - over the same period.

Hamas and the committee purportedly running the demonstrations say they want a peaceful protest. New mass protests are expected again on Friday.

After the deaths last Friday, the United States, which is Israel's closest ally, blocked the Security Council from issuing a statement that would have authorized the secretary-general to conduct an independent investigation. Palestinians revere brethren killed in the conflict with Israel as martyrs.
