The e-auction for the BCCI's broadcast rights for global and domestic cricket to be played in India for the next five years will spill over into the third day with the three entities engaged in a fierce battle.

The online auction began at 2:00 IST and went on till 6:00 PM IST, the scheduled close of online auction for the day.

The online auction will now resume on Wednesday at 11.00 AM from the same stage.

India is expected to play 102 games including 22 Tests, 42 ODIs and 38 Twenty20 Internationals at home in the five-year cycle. What would have happened if the BCCI had adopted the e-auction method for the IPL rights too?

Facebook had placed a whopping bid of Rs 3900 crore (USD 600 million) for exclusive digital rights of IPL but lost to Star who acquired the rights to a consolidated bid.

Initially six companies, including Facebook and Google, entered the fray to bid for worldwide and domestic matches in India from April 15 2018 to March 31 2023.

The e-auction, which is a first for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and for any sports property, had seen as many as six players express interest.

Sony India, Star India and Reliance Jio are the three bidders still in the hunt with the auction set to continue on Wednesday. "SPN doesn't have a big digital platform, but if they have a partnership with Facebook or Google, all will benefit", a market analyst told Express.

This has left Star, Sony and Jio as the only bidders in fray for the five-year rights. The day started with top GCR bid of Rs 4442 crore. Star officials, involved in the bidding war for the India cricket rights, could not be contacted for a comment.

The media rights will be awarded for a five year period from 1 April 2018 till 31 March 2023.

The Star network has already acquired rights for the IPL.

The BCCI will auction the media rights in three main sections in the form of Digital Rights Package of the Rest of the World XI (ROW), the Indian sub-continent digital rights package and joint rights package along with Global TV rights.
