Apple May Ditch Intel Chips For Macs By 2020

The latest report from Bloomberg says that Apple is planning to use its own ARM-based chips on Mac computers starting from 2020.

At the same time, this decision will allow faster Apple to bring new features to all their products and stand out from competitors.

Intel sales of chips such as the Core i7 to Apple are estimated to account for 5pc of the former's annual revenues.

Bloomberg reports that the initiative "is still in early developmental stages", but is meant to bring Macs into the same unified architecture that allows all of Apple's other devices to work together "seamlessly".

However, Credit Suisse analysts said the stock move was largely overblown because Apple's reported switch would only impact 4% of Intel's potential revenue and 4% of its earnings, or 17 cents per share. Apple could become the first of several companies deciding to turn to internally-designed processors instead of purchasing them from others. Also, the first generation of Apple Watches lacked the necessary resources to run social network apps. The move would come at the expense of chips from Intel, an unwelcome development for the chipmaker. While Apple's decision to go solo with its Mac hardware might not affect Intel's bottom line in a big way, it is likely to raise the possibility of other major firms deciding to build their own hardware capabilities. Dell Technologies Inc., HP Inc., Lenovo Group Ltd., and Asustek Computer Inc. use Intel chips.

Moving to design its own chips inside Macs will help Apple release new models on its own timeline, rather than relying on Intel's roadmap.

Intel shares were down more than 7.5 percent to $48.12 in late afternoon trading on the Nasdaq exchange in NY. Vetr upgraded Apple from a hold rating to a buy rating and set a $177.17 price objective for the company in a report on Wednesday, November 29th.

An initiative known as Kalamata will see Apple turn to its own foundries to produce CPUs for Mac computers by 2020 if unnamed sources familiar with the matter are to be believed. It makes sense that they're going in this direction. Apple's revenue for the quarter was up 12.7% compared to the same quarter last year. analysts forecast that Apple will post 11.37 earnings per share for the current fiscal year.
