Dallet wins Wisconsin Supreme Court race

Wisconsin-Supreme-Court-1-7 Who is Rebecca Dallet? Liberal Judge Wins Wisconsin Supreme Court Elections
| 05 April, 2018, 01:51

"I attribute it to Wisconsin voters standing up to special interests", said Dallet, a Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge.

But Democrats are eager to see momentum, especially after they won a special Senate election in January for a reliably conservative seat in the western part of the state. Walker, a Republican, endorsed Screnock.

Screnock, a Sauk County judge appointed and endorsed by Republican Gov. Scott Walker, had the backing of the National Rifle Association and the Wisconsin Republican Party. According to the Journal Sentinel, Dallet trounced Screnock 56 percent to 44 percent, a victory that chips away at conservative control of the court and hands liberals their first victory on an open court seat in more than two decades.

Walker says the Dallet win shows "we are at risk of a Blue Wave in Wisconsin".

Dallet won the election, making her the first liberal who is not an incumbent to be elected in 23 years to the court, CNN reported.

Although the race was viewed by some as a bellwether, results of past Supreme Court elections have not consistently proven to be predictive of what will happen in November. (It also means six of the seven Justices are women). 'I think people are exhausted of what's been going on in our state in terms of the money coming in to buy these elections and people spoke out tonight'. It's also why it took three judicial orders for Walker to stop hiding from voters and hold special elections in Senate District 1 and Assembly District 42.

Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairwoman Martha Laning said the win was a warning shot to Walker, calling it a "huge loss" for him because his 'endorsement, philosophy and politics were on the ballot'.

Screnock told the crowd at his election watch party he was unable to get in touch with Dallet to congratulate her on her win.

Democrats, who have been starved for electoral victories since Walker and Republicans swept into power in 2010 amid a national recession, were quick to celebrate the win as a sign Walker's days as governor are numbered.

Dallet, 48, has been a Milwaukee County circuit judge since 2008 and previously worked 11 years as a prosecutor.
