PARENTS are being urged to be vigilant over a unsafe new social media challenge of teens snorting condoms up their noses.

It should go without saying, of course, that snorting condoms is risky.

Like other viral fads, this one has been around for years but is just now catching fire on social media, mostly via YouTube. "As graphic as it is, we have to show parents because teens are going online looking for challenges and recreating them".

However, it's gained much more popularity in recent years after YouTuber Savannah Strong uploaded a new video of the challenge in 2013, spawning a number of imitations that have proliferated on YouTube and social media platforms since. According to Dr. Bruce Y. Lee, associate professor of International Health at Johns Hopkins, a condom could become stuck in the nasal cavity or throat, and could cause choking.

Health authorities warn that the new "game" poses a real risk and can kill. The practice could be risky to your sinuses and potentially life-threatening if the condom gets stuck in your throat.

Newsweek on Saturday quoted a report last week by San Antonio-based TV station KABB, which said a state education specialist visited schools in the area to brief parents on "dangerous trends" such as the condom-snorting challenge. While the shock factor of shoving something up your nose and pulling it out of your mouth might make for a viral video, the risks involved aren't worth any number of likes and views.

The spermicidal lubricant found on most condoms can also irritate the inner lining of the nose and cause allergic reaction or infection.

He also points to a 2004 report published in The Indian Journal of Chest Disease & Allied Sciences, which documents the case of a woman who accidentally inhaled a condom during oral sex which led to pneumonia and partial lung collapse.
