Chinese space station expected to crash back to Earth this weekend

The Chinese space station called Tiangong-1 is expected to crash to Earth within hours.

Leroy Chiao, a former NASA astronaut, told Sky News: "It's really hard to predict these things because many things influence the density of the atmosphere, and you know, how much grab it's going to have on the space craft as it comes down".

The European Space Agency had previously given a more precise estimate of 12:25am on Easter Monday but has stressed the time is "highly variable".

Debris from satellites, space launches and the International Space Station enters the atmosphere every few months, but only one person is known to have been hit by any of it: American woman Lottie Williams, who was struck but not injured by a falling piece of a U.S. Delta II rocket while exercising in an Oklahoma park in 1997.

Leroy Chiao, a former U.S. astronaut who flew on four space missions, told CNN he would be "surprised if any major pieces survived the re-entry, as the Tiangong-1 was not that big of a spacecraft as they go, and it did not have a heat shield".

Zhu Congpeng, from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporate said: "We have been continuously monitoring Tiangong-1 and expect to allow it to fall within the first half of this year".

An artist's depiction shows Tiangong-1, the Chinese space station that will plummet to Earth soon. The unsuccessful orbit for the spacecraft did not slow down China's space program, however.

Brad Tucker, an astrophysicist at Australian National University, said Tiangong 1's re-entry was "mostly successful" and that it would have been better if the space station had not been spinning toward Earth. In September 2016, China launched its second space lab, Tiangong-2.

Subsequent communiques to the United Nations promised to provide a "timely forecast of its re-entry" and that Beijing would "continue to closely track and monitor" Tiangong-1's operation.

Scientists have emphasized the danger of being hit by falling debris is tiny, as low as one in 1 trillion, as the structure is likely to burn up in the atmosphere during reentry.

Earlier, scientists had expected that weather from the sun like solar storms and solar flares - bursts of X-rays and ultraviolet light - might heat the Earth's outer atmosphere, causing the air to expand and rise.

The agency, however, did not provide an exact arrival time or likely landing site for abandoned eight-tonne Tiangong, a Chinese name for Heavenly Palace.

"It might be an orbit later, and then the whole window changes", Perlman said of the predictions available Friday afternoon.

China also plans to put a man on the moon and send a rover to Mars.
