England fans behaviour 'appalling' after arrest in football friendly vs Netherlands

Ninety England fans were arrested in Amsterdam on Friday prior to the friendly against the Netherlands, bringing the total over two days beyond 100, local police confirm.

Police in the Dutch capital said in a tweet that one supporter was injured and sent to a hospital for treatment.

A number of England fans were expected to have bought tickets in the home end for Friday's friendly - the last away game before the World Cup.

However, Southgate's words appear to have been ignored and the news will further tarnish the reputation of England supporters who have a long history of hooliganism.

Police chiefs have condemned the "appalling" behaviour of a "large number" of England football fans after dozens were arrested in Amsterdam.

After trouble on Thursday evening, Amsterdam police confirmed that 102 people were detained on Friday, comprising of two Dutch fans and 100 Englishmen.

Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard scored England's goal.

The Dutch national anthem was also booed by a minority of England fans, an act described as "unacceptable" by England manager Gareth Southgate.

A police spokesman said the arrests were mainly for "disturbing the peace".

It was England's last scheduled away match before they travel to Russian Federation for this year's World Cup, with a well-deserved win against a Dutch side who will be one of the major absentees from the tournament. As was reiterated ahead of the fixture, we always urge supporters to respect our hosts and behave in a responsible manner.

The flare-ups in Amsterdam come a year after despicable scenes marred England's friendly against Germany in Dortmund.

The FA will review those caught up in trouble in Amsterdam to see if ESTC members were involved and punish them accordingly.

"They attacked us for no reason".
