Police have not confirmed the report.

Both ground and air ambulances were being staged near the Veterans Home as a precaution. Thornton said she was anxious about how her dad's coping with the stress, considering his age, PTSD and slight dementia.

According to CHP Capt. Chris Childs, a hotline at 707-948-3331 was created for those who are concerned about the safety of friends and family at the Yountville Veterans Home. Kamer's wife, Devereaux Smith, is a fundraiser for the nonprofit Pathway Home and was at the party.

Law enforcement authorities rushed to a state-run veterans home in Northern California after reports that someone with a gun had fired shots and taken hostages, officials said.

Kamer says his wife is now inside the home's dining hall and is not allowed to leave.

He does not know if the shooter was a veteran receiving treatment from the home.

Nobody is known to be injured, he said, but earlier the man and officers fired shots at each other.

CalVet, a government organization representing California veterans, also confirmed that there was an ongoing situation.

Sources tell KTVU one of the remaining hostages is the executive director of The Pathway Home, which is a program that serves veterans.

"We have not made contact with the gunman yet", Robertson said, adding that cops are "approaching this as an active shooter situation".

A large police presence is in the area.

The Napa County Sheriff's Department issued an alert to residents at 10:30 a.m. Friday warning them to avoid the area because of "activity at the Veterans Home in Yountville".

A black-clad man with body armor and an automatic weapon has taken at least three hostages, and reports of shots fired have surfaced.

The sheriff's department did not immediately respond to a telephone call from The Associated Press.

The Yountville Veterans Home, located in Napa Valley wine country about 50 miles northeast of San Francisco, is the largest such facility in the United States and is home to about 1,000 veterans, according to the home's website.

"We have activated our emergency response protocol and are cooperating with law enforcement", the state Department of Veterans Affairs said in a Twitter post.
