First look at Benedict Cumberbatch as 'The Grinch'

Dr. Seuss' The Grinch First Trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch is a Mean One 'The Grinch': First Trailer Reveals Benedict Cumberbatch as the Lovable Grump

For those not familiar with the book or 2000's live-action movie starring Jim Carrey, the film will follow The Grinch's scheme to steal Christmas by posing as Santa.

The script was written by Michael LeSieur (You, Me and Dupree, The Maiden Heist, Keeping Up with the Joneses).

The new flick is co-directed by Yarrow Cheney (The Secret Life of Pets) and Kevin Smith's longtime producing partner Scott Mosier (Clerks, Mallrats).

Cumberbatch will voice the eponymous Grinch in the film, and movie fans have been treated to a first look at the latest iteration of the character in the form of The Grinch's first official trailer. It's a bit ironic as well because The Grinch is a production between Illumination and Universal Pictures, the same two companies that collaborated on Despicable Me 2, the film the Pharrell track was made for.

Illumination released the first trailer for The Grinch, which can be viewed above, after teasing its arrival yesterday with a poster featuring the Grinch and Max, the Grinch's canine friend. Funny, heartwarming and visually stunning, it's a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism.

Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations.

The trailer is little more than a tease - we see The Grinch and his dog Max grumpily stomping around his cave, enviously looking down at the people of Who-ville and all the happiness they feel around Christmas time. As Christmas approaches, however, her good-natured scheming threatens to collide with the Grinch's more nefarious one. Will the Grinch succeed in silencing the Whos' holiday cheer once and for all?

The Grinch opens November 9, check out the trailer below. But, with Cindy-Lou focused primarily on her sheme to thank Santa, it's possible she won't cross paths with the Grinch right away.
