Winter Storm On The Way

Winter storm watch for Berks set to begin Tuesday night Winter storm warning extended west
| 09 March, 2018, 09:51

The second major snowstorm to slam the Northeast in a week is producing reports of "thundersnow". Thunder and lightning are much more common in warm-season thunderstorms, according to meteorologist Jeff Haby.

On Wednesday, the National Weather Service office in Gray updated its forecast for the storm, shifting higher expected snowfall totals and stronger wind closer to Maine's coast.

Schools in several MA districts were ordered closed Thursday as the Northeast prepares for a second winter storm in as many weeks.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf announced a state of emergency for several counties in preparation for the storm.

Motorists are being urged to avoid travel unless it's absolutely necessary.

Here are my thoughts on what different parts of the state will experience.

The watch starts late Tuesday night and runs through late Wednesday, with 3 to 8 inches of accumulation possible.

The powerful gusts aren't expected to be as extreme as those last week which brought down trees and power lines and sent trampolines flying through the streets. About 300 crews were pre-treating the roads ahead of the storm.

At times, this snow may fall at the rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour or heavier. The winds could also contribute to air travel delays and lead to blowing snow. "The heaviest snow will probably end by mid-morning with a light snow continuing to noon or a little after".

More than 2,000 flights across the region - 1,700 in the NY metro area alone - were canceled, a number expected to climb as conditions deteriorated, the Associated Press reported. "All in all, it hasn't been a awful winter, and it seems that March is always our worst month for major storms". PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.

The Amtrak passenger train service canceled some Wednesday trains between Washington and Boston, as well as some services in Pennsylvania and other parts of the Northeast.

The outages turned to outrage for a New Jersey man whose home had been without electricity since Friday. Worcester could see 12 to 18 inches.

This comes just days after another storm knocked out power to millions, some of whom are still waiting to have their service restored. Baker noted that tides are not as astronomically high as at the height of last week's storm, but could still bring additional flooding woes. Some New England and New Jersey shoreline communities were still dealing with the effects of that storm.

"These storms have now become the rule rather than the exception, and they have to have the capacity to quickly restore power", he said.

The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued a Winter Storm Warning for many places, including Boston, citing snow accumulation estimates of up to 8 inches. The heavy wet snow combined with the strong winds are likely to cause power outages. Some areas to the south may just see a coating.

A few inches of additional snowfall may accumulate in parts of MA, southern New Hampshire, Vermont and northern NY.

This time winds will blow briskly from the northeast sustained up to 20 miles per hour with gusts as high as 30 to 40 miles per hour.
