The Airport's Sally Fielke says the issue has been fixed by airport technicians and the software provider.

Travellers flying out of Sydney Airport are being told to expect some flow-on delays after a technical problem caused early-morning chaos for thousands.

The glitch affected outbound flights from its worldwide terminal and one of its two domestic terminals.

Jetstar expected the issue to create a backlog of up to two hours throughout the day.

Officials are urging any passengers who planned to fly from Sydney airport today to call their airline and/or check their flight time and status online.

"We are experiencing outbound delays while we fix this technical issue which we're working to rectify as quickly as we can", she said.

The technical glitch and subsequent delays come several months after flights were grounded at Sydney Airport's domestic terminal in September a year ago, due to a technical fault with an air traffic control system, managed by Airservices Australia.

A spokeswoman for Brisbane Airport told the Courier Mail security screens were closed for 30 minutes after the breach.

"The AFP is assisting Brisbane Airport security staff following a routine passenger screening matter", a statement from the Australian Federal Police said.

All planes yet to take off were instructed to disembark so passengers could be re-screened.
