Second snowstorm hits US East Coast, several flights grounded

Another storm moves up US East Coast dumping snow, knocking out power No power but plenty of snow as northeast US gets slammed

Up to 18 inches were possible in northern New England.

A motorist navigates around a downed limb partially blocking a road and resting on a power line after a snowstorm, March 8, 2018, in Northborough, Mass. Kevin Crowley, of Weyland, Mass., works to remove damaged tree branches from a driveway, March 8, 2018, in Sherborn, Mass.

At least 60 million Americans were in the storm's path, prompting plane, train and school cancellations across the Northeast. While it's not as strong as last week's as far as wind and waves, it will produce a lot of snow, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.

Parts of NY and New England will continue to see snowfall at rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour into the overnight hours, forecasters said.

Some of the biggest snow totals were in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont, where several spots were slammed with up to three feet, the National Weather Service said.

"It's kind of terrible", said New York University student Alessa Raiford, who put two layers of clothing on a pug named Jengo before taking him for a walk in slushy, sloppy Manhattan, where rain gave way to wet snow in the afternoon. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in place from eastern Pennsylvania through the Northeast.

Cities braced themselves for the storm, after a nor'easter last week ripped through the coast.

Ten people were taken to hospitals with symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning after running a generator inside a home in North White Plains, New York, police said. Snow is expected to continue to fall through Thursday morning.

By late Wednesday afternoon, parts of northern New Jersey and CT and NY had recorded than 11 inches of snow, the National Weather Service reported.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker urged residents to use caution.

Winds and snow are bringing down more power lines, piling on to the crippling outages remaining from last weekend's storm.

New Jersey State Police said on Thursday there were more than 530 crashes on the state's roads during the previous day's storm.

Snowfall rates reached as much as 2 inches per hour with wind gusts up to 30 mph. Many schools and businesses remained closed Thursday or were holding delayed openings.

Almost 200 flights into and out of Boston Logan International airport were canceled.

Proximity to the ocean and just the right elevation helped spare New York City from the worst of Wednesday's nor'easter that dumped more than two feet of snow elsewhere in the region and left more than 850,000 homes and businesses without power.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo deployed 400 National Guard troops to conduct wellness checks and assist with storm recovery.

Not so fast, say the experts who spend every waking hour analyzing weather patterns, storm systems and computer guidance models.

Major flooding has also been reported along the New Jersey shore.

"Thundersnow", as the phenomenon is known, is snow paired with lightning and resulting thunder.

More than 500 flights - including at airports in New Jersey, New York, Boston and Philadelphia - were canceled by midday Thursday, according to FlightAware. New York City's Metro-North commuter railroad suspended service on lines connecting the city to its northern suburbs and CT because of downed trees, and the Long Island Rail Road also was experiencing delays.
