Opioid overdoses jump 30% across US — CDC

Opioid crisis: overdoses increased by a third across US in 14 months, says CDC Emergency rooms slammed with opioid overdoses in Missouri and Illinois
| 09 March, 2018, 09:50

Fifteen out of 10,000 emergency room visits involved opioid overdoses between July 2016 and September 2017.

Emergency room visits for opioid overdoses increased nationwide and across all demographic groups between July 2016 and September 2017, according to ER records analyzed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The data did not reveal what types of drugs or drug combinations led to these suspected opioid overdoses, Schuchat said.

The report also confirms that what started as a problem predominantly in suburban and rural areas has become increasingly urban: Large, metropolitan areas saw a 54 percent jump in ER visits, likely because of the influx of synthetic opioids like fentanyl into heroin and other drugs.

The CDC also looked at data from the National Syndromic Surveillance Program BioSense platform which analyzes 45 states and found increases in all regions of the USA with the largest increase in the Midwest (70 percent).

"This fast-moving epidemic does not distinguish age, sex or state or county lines, and it's still increasing in every region of the United States", she said during a media briefing on Tuesday. All five US regions saw significant increases, but the numbers rose the most in western states - about 70 percent.

Both non-fatal and deadly overdoses surged in the majority of the 16 states from which the CDC collected data. In Wisconsin and DE, the rate of visits more than doubled.

Modest decreases were seen in Kentucky, at 15 percent, and statistically insignificant drops of less than 10 percent in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

Until now, the CDC has reported mostly about overdose deaths, Schuchat noted, but "looking at ED data can help us get information before people die". "Increases in opioid overdoses varied by region and urbanization level, indicating a need for localized responses".

SCHUCHAT: The Midwestern region was most hard hit with an increase of 70 percent.

"We know that up to 90 percent of people will relapse in the first year going through rehab", he said. "So we take the time that we have with those patients very seriously and we try to maximize what we can for them both in the Emergency Department and how we hook them up with treatment".

KOLODNY: And yet nothing has happened.
