But De Kock's charge has been pegged at level one while Warner will walk the plank on level two.

Australia travelled to Port Elizabeth on Tuesday with a 1-0 lead in the four-Test series and some unwanted baggage, created by Warner's heated run-in with de Kock.

Du Plessis says that both parties got a little personal with each other and that the situation should not have spilt over off the field of play.

Earlier on Tuesday, Australian coach Darren Lehmann said that he was "certainly supporting" Warner, and that his position as the vice-captain was not in jeopardy.

Australian wicketkeeper Tim Paine on Wednesday claimed that de Kock had crossed the line by making a comment about Warner's wife.

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith has taken a shot at David Warner, saying the Australian vice-captain has the tendency to be "a bit of a fool".

Ex-Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist refused to take sides in regards to both incidents, but admitted that they tarnish the image of cricket to those who may not know much about the sport.

His captain Steve Smith suggested De Kock had enraged the hot-headed lefthander by getting personal in his sledging, the nature of which focused on Warner's wife, according to local media reports.

Former spinner Warne tweeted: "Chat, banter, sledging has always been apart of any series between SA & Oz".

"Correct Warney.but it's clear plenty of personal nonsense has been spoken & the man in question I hear from many has been doing it for a while so I guess someone eventually was going to touch a nerve with a response", he said on Twitter. "We want to play a way that gets us success and we've just got to make sure we don't cross the line - that's the key", Lehmann said.

South Africa's manager Mohammed Moosajee claims Warner peppered de Kock with personal barbs during play.

Warner could yet be banned from the second chapter of the four-Test series that starts on Friday, depending on how many demerit points are added to his record.

"I'm sure the captains will chat and the coaches will chat and we'll get away to play the game", Lehmann said.

Well, that's quite a cute date you got, papa Jayawardene.

"Respect is the key & and I hope nothing personal was said to any player towards anyone from either side".

The controversy has divided opinion, with Warne calling on the players to avoid "personal" comments - while also urging them to "have a beer together" and patch things up.

"There was nothing we said that was inappropriate".
