Army bomb disposal officers have been called the site.

There had been speculation of the identity of the driver of the auto, however, sources said the woman - who was uninjured in the fire - was not a serving police officer.

A fire in a vehicle belonging to a former police officer in Northern Ireland is no longer thought to be terrorist related.

The officer is not believed to have been in the auto - thought to be her personal vehicle - at the time.

MP Ian Paisley initially claimed the incident involved a "suspected under vehicle booby trap device".

A booby trap bomb has partially exploded on an A-road near Belfast, setting fire to a police auto.

Emergency services were alerted to the burning auto on Ballyrobert Road shortly before 8:30am this morning. The victim is reported to be a serving PSNI officer.

"I understand that a terrorist attack on a police officer in Ballyrobert, Co Antrim has taken place", Paisley said.

"We do send our thoughts and our prayers to the female police officer and indeed to her family".

However, the incident is no longer believed to be sinister in nature.

DUP leader Arlene Foster MLA had expressed concern for the former policewoman, describing reports as "very disturbing".

'The main A2 remains closed at this time while the investigation into the circumstances of the incident continue'.
