Iran pushes Europe to pressure US on nuclear deal
08 March, 2018, 02:14
Last week, ahead of his trip to Iran this week, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian'ssaid at a news conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that Iran's ballistic missiles program "worries us enormously".
Talks are expected to focus on Iran's involvement in the Syrian Civil war and Iran's ballistic missile program, which both Le Drian and French President Emmanuel Macron have criticized Iran's missile program in recent weeks, with Le Drian stating that Iran's ballistic missile capacity anxious France "enormously".
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said the European Union is capable of playing a constructive role in order to protect the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) aka nuclear deal.
In October, Iran said it has no need to increase the range of its ballistic missiles because they were already capable of reaching USA forces stationed in the region. He added that Le Drian should adopt a less critical approach towards Iran if France hopes to strengthen relations between the two countries.
"Those who have waged wars and brought chaos and conflict to the region in the past seventy years have no right to talk about the threat of Iran", Rouhani said.
In a separate statement, Le Drian called upon the worldwide community to take action to prevent Iranian missiles from becoming a threat to "all regional actors".
"Everyone needs to know that we are not concerned over the progress of other countries", Rouhani said.
"Not only haven't we driven people out of their countries, but we have welcomed refugees with open arms", the president said. "Iran is [the pillar of] stability and security for the entire region, but of course, it will defend its rights [when needed]". Our answer is clear: "Make the [deal] a successful experience and then we discuss other issues", Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister and chief nuclear negotiator Abbas Araghchi said in February.
The president further stressed that the economic, cultural, political, social and particularly the military power of the Islamic Republic will never be used against other countries.
"If we were seeking hegemony, we had many opportunities to go about it, but we never took any advantage of those situations", Rouhani maintained.
