Jose Mourinho hailed the impact of all three of his Manchester United substitutes as they helped the team come from behind to defeat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday evening.

United won the game with a last minute screamer by midfielder Nemanja Matic.

"We'll show the same character as we did (against Palace). but we have to be honest. we have to play better, especially when you see our first half performance".

Speaking after the game, Matic admitted it's not usually his job to score last-minute winners but was happy nonetheless.

"I can't criticise any player for the effort they made or their discipline tactically".

United were relieved, but it took a brilliant one-handed save from De Gea, diving to his right to keep out Benteke's header, to ensure their comeback wasn't in vain.

It was the first time United had come from 2-0 down to win a Premier League game since December 2013 at Hull.

Manchester United is in second place with 62 points, 16 points behind the leaders, Manchester City.

"You always need that little bit of luck to win a match in the last few minutes", Mourinho said.

"It's very hard but we kept faith and belief".

United's initial sluggishness suggested they were distracted by the prospect of Saturday's fixture with rivals Liverpool, but they fought back convincingly, extending Palace's winless run to six and denying them a win that would have taken them from 18th to 13th in the Premier League.

"I saw a group of players give their all for the club against a team who on paper are bigger than us".

Asked about the lack of such comeback wins in Manchester United's recent history, Smalling told MUTV: "No, we haven't".

"I didn't think we were that much in danger". It would have been nice to have two more points, but we still would have been very much in a relegation battle.

Asked about the momentum gained ahead of the Liverpool game, he said: "I think it has teed up perfectly that we have gone above them again".
