"This was a signal to the West, the USA in particular, that Russia is ready for nuclear isolationism", said Andrei Kortunov, head of the Russian International Affairs Council, a Kremlin-established research group.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia has been quite successful in its efforts to match the status of a major weapons exporter.

The Russian military budget, reduced to 2.77 trillion roubles (US$48.5 billion) this year from 3.05 trillion roubles in 2017 amid belt-tightening because of a stagnant economy, is a fraction of U.S. defence spending.

"The work on the modern weaponry has taken many years".

Putin also declared that the value of weapons export contracts signed a year ago doubled to $16 billion.

"I ask you to continue acting the best way possible in this highly important direction not to let foreign intelligence services gain access to information of political, economic, technological and military nature", Putin told the FSB leadership.

According to the President, activity of foreign intelligence against Russian Federation has increased over the last years.

"I know that they did not represent the Russian state, the Russian authorities".

Putin ordered FSB to continue prevention of espionage activities against Russian Federation in political, economic, technologic and defense areas.

Putin, a former KGB officer who has brought many veterans of Soviet-era security agencies into high positions, is set to secure a new six-year presidential term in a March 18 election.

The Russian president is wrong, of course.

"It is no secret that unprecedented and unconcealed pressure is being exerted on the states, which want to cooperate with Russia in the military-technical sphere, the Russian leader said at a meeting of the Commission for Military and Technical Cooperation".

During his address, Putin said everything Russian Federation is doing to strengthen its defenses is within existing arms control agreements. "This is a very strong argument for those who want to develop the United States military potential".

This assessment is given both by buyers themselves and prospective customers of Russian armaments and military hardware, Putin added.
