Marine Le Pen Placed Under Formal Investigation for Tweets of ISIS Beheadings

Front National name change 'political suicide', says founder French far-right leader Marine Le Pen charged over sharing brutal ISIS photos
| 04 March, 2018, 05:03

French prosecutors filed preliminary charges Thursday against far-right leader Marine Le Pen for tweeting brutal images of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) violence, in a new blow to a woman long seen as the face of Europe's anti-immigrant populism.

Le Pen wrote "Daesh is THIS" alongside the images.

Another image showed a man in an orange jumpsuit being crushed by a tank driven by an ISIL fighter.

The charges come as Le Pen's party is in crisis after she lost her presidential bid previous year.

Le Pen didn't comment publicly on Thursday's preliminary charges, made possible after the French parliament lifted her immunity from prosecution in the case late previous year. If convicted, the French politician will face a potential three years in jail as well as a €75,000 fine (about $92,000).

"I am being charged for having condemned the horrors of Daesh".

In a separate interview in French media, she said: "If they are trying to silence me, they will not succeed". France's National Assembly took a vote in fall, lifting the immunity that was protecting Le Pen from prosecution. Le Pen removed the photo of Foley after his family denounced the post.

The Front National (FN) leader is not the only member of her party facing the same charges.

Faced with outrage against France, Ms Le Pen later deleted the tweets, but the row did not stop her standing to become President of France in 2017.

Manuel Valls, France's Prime Minister at the time, described the photos as "monstrous", adding that Ms Le Pen had shown "political and moral failing" and her "non-respect for victims".

It's one of multiple legal cases targeting Le Pen or the National Front.

Ms Le Pen denies the charges.

According to The Guardian, Le Pen's father "has several convictions for the offense [hate speech], including a conviction for contesting crimes against humanity after saying the Nazi occupation of France was not 'particularly inhumane'".
