Wilberg stated that past year and in 2016, he and other recruiters were told to approve or dismiss candidates based exclusively on whether they were women, black or Latino. The paper notes that 69% of Google's employees are men, while 91% of the company's workforce is white or Asian-a number that's stayed relatively the same for the past three years. Wilberg claims that Google implemented "clear and irrefutable policies" meant to exclude white and Asian men in an attempt to increase the company's overall diversity.

A former YouTube employee has sued Google for allegedly pressuring recruiters to only look for female, black, and Hispanic or Latinx applicants.

According to Wilberg's lawsuit, Google's human-resources department began investigating YouTube's hiring practices in the spring of 2016.

He also claimed that the tech giant retaliated against him for opposing these policies, eventually firing him in November 2017, according to The Verge. According to his lawsuit filed last month in San Mateo County, Google set hiring quotas and, at one point in 2017, explicitly informed recruiters to strictly hire "diverse" candidates.

Wilberg claims that his manager sent the team an email that stated, "please continue with L3 candidates in process and only accept new L3 candidates that are from historically underrepresented groups".

The problem is that mandatory quotas based on gender or ethnicity may violate USA anti-discrimination laws, depending on how they're implemented.

The hiring practices challenged in the lawsuit fall into a controversial area of labor law, where setting goals to diversify is acceptable, but setting quotas is not. In another encounter, Wilberg recalls, "One team member complained that managers were speaking about blacks like they were objects".

Google, on the other hand, completely rejected the claims, and says that their hiring policy strongly considers the merit of the candidate over the identities.

Wilberg claims that his performance reviews began to suffer as he refused to follow YouTube's diversity hiring agenda.

"We will vigorously defend this lawsuit". In the same statement, the spokesperson told the Journal, "At the same time, we unapologetically try to find a diverse pool of qualified candidates for open roles, as this helps us hire the best people, improve our culture, and build better products". Many have adopted policies and programs created to encourage more balanced hiring, not only to right past discrimination but for their own economic advantage: According to management consultancy McKinsey, diverse companies deliver better financial results. The former employee says he was sacked in late 2017, after complaining about its hiring policies.

The company also "had a practice of systematically discriminating against older engineers in its hiring practices", the suit says.
