At 9:31 p.m. that night, Kelly announced that Porter was out.

Like Sanders did last month, Kelly on Friday blamed a little-known White House office composed of career staffers.

Kelly described himself as shocked by the alleged abuse, saying he had viewed Porter as the "ultimate gentleman". Kelly said those first queries focused on an allegation of "emotional abuse" from one woman.

Though Kelly said it was "nothing illegal", he added that it "wasn't quite up to the standards" he had been used to while working as a military general at the Pentagon. "I am proud to serve alongside him". "I accepted his resignation earlier today, and will ensure a swift and orderly transition".

During an impromptu meeting with reporters after President Donald Trump had departed for the weekend, Kelly explained the security clearance process for White House officials.

Hicks is expected to resign in the coming weeks, making her the third member of the Trump administration to walk out from that post-not including former press secretary Sean Spicer, who filled the position in an acting capacity twice, and Jason Miller, who Trump first picked for the job in December 2016.

He only further muddied the waters Friday surrounding the former staff secretary's departure by saying the internal "mix-up" came the next day (Feb. 7).

Mr. Porter's resignation was announced February 7, though Mr. Kelly said he received the resignation a day earlier.

"They still not had evaluated his package to make a recommendation one way or the other", according to Kelly. Porter would remain on staff for a time before leaving. "At least I'm an honest front-stabbing dude", he said. Anderson, the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, Christopher Wray, testified just recently that they delivered a completed Federal Bureau of Investigation background check to the White House security office in July of past year.

Mr. Kelly did not say what was in the initial cache of information sent by the F.B.I. last March, or what the bureau sent in subsequent bundles in July and November, delivered after the White House had requested follow-up information on the investigation into Mr.

"He had the information", former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci told CNN on Thursday. "#MeToo is as much about those who protect the abusers with their silence as the abusers themselves".

"I should have collected everyone that works here", Mr. Kelly said when asked about the fuzziness in the hours after the first report of abuse.
