Diabetes can be divided into five different groups

There may be five types of diabetes that need different forms of treatment suggests Lancet study Marcelo Camargo AgĂȘncia Brasil Flickr

At present, according to Diabetes UK, of those diagnosed with diabetes in the UK, 10 per cent have type 1 and 90 per cent type 2, but these new sub categories could explain why some patients respond well to certain treatments while others do not.

Researchers identified genetically marked groupings of the disease that vary by severity, age at which they most often occur and probable complications. These subgroups had significantly different patient characteristics and risk of diabetic complications. Current diagnostics and classification of diabetes are insufficient and unable to predict future complications or choice of treatment'.

Cluster 1 describes diabetes similar to Type 1 diabetes wherein it is an autoimmune disease that affects young seemingly healthy people who can not produce insulin. The more common form, type 2, is linked to obesity and stops the body from making enough insulin or reacting to its production. Recent research from Sweden suggests that the two-pronged classification of diabetes-as type 1 or 2-may not be the best method for diagnosing and treating the disease.

Worldwide, diabetes affects about one in every 11 adults. Subgroup classification was validated in three independent cohorts.

Cluster 3: Severe insulin-resistant diabetes.

In 2016 39,334 Dorset people were recorded as living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. These patients had an early onset of the disease and were positive for GADA.

Diabetes is now divided into type 1 diabetes (approximately 10%), type 2 diabetes (85-90%) and several less common diseases like latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) and secondary diabetes.

The second cluster was patients who showed insulin deficiency and were GADA negative.

The third cluster made up 15.3 percent of the whole cohort of participants. This group had relatively low use of metformin, despite the authors noting that this group would likely see the most benefit from such treatment. The most common cluster.

In the study, researchers from Finland and Sweden examined 13,270 newly diagnosed diabetes patients, ages 18 to 97, by isolating measurements of insulin secretion, insulin resistance, blood sugar levels, age, and the onset of illness. "By contrast with previous attempts to dissect the heterogeneity of diabetes, we used variables reflective of key aspects of diabetes that are monitored in patients".

The study was supported by grants from the Swedish Research Council, a European Research Council Advanced Research grant, a Vinnova Swelife grant, and grants from the Academy of Finland, Sigrid Juselius Foundation, Novo Nordisk Foundation, and Scania University Hospital.

Group 2 had a higher risk of blindness while bunch 3 had the most serious risk of kidney sickness, so a few bunches may profit by upgraded screening.

Dr. Victoria Salem, a consultant and clinical scientist at Imperial College London, told the BBC that the study was a step forward for diabetes treatment but that it wouldn't lead to a change in practice just yet. Last night, research bodies welcomed the new study, but stressed more examination of the drug's effects was still needed. And it only involved Scandinavian patients, so will need to be confirmed in other populations.
