"Ninety lawmakers voted for Sarkissian, 10 voted against".

The Armenian National Assembly on Friday elected Republican Party candidate Sarkissian as the country's new president. A quarter of the parliamentary votes were necessary to nominate a candidate for the presidency.

Ninety lawmakers voted in favor of the 64-year-old Sarkissian, a former prime minister and now the country's ambassador to the United Kingdom; 10 voted against; and one lawmaker abstained.

Following the parliament voter Sarkissian met with President Serzh Sarkisian at the presidential compound, where the president offered his congratulations to the incoming leader. The functions of the president, who is elected to serve a seven-year term, will be representational. With Armenia switching to a parliamentary system of government, he would remain the country's most powerful man in that case.

Outgoing Sarksyan became president in 2008 and nominated former prime minister Sarkissian to succeed him in January. In addition to his diplomatic mission to the United Kingdom, he went on to become Senior Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Europe (Deputy Foreign Minister) and concurrently represented Armenia as Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and The Vatican.

Clashes over control of Nagorno-Karabakh, which lies inside Azerbaijan but is controlled by ethnic Armenians, have intensified in the past three years and there was a flare-up in violence there in April 2016.

Sarkissian, 64, has repeatedly stated in recent weeks that despite the lack of executive powers he intends to play a major role in Armenia's political and economic life.
