The incredible discovery was captured using a video drone, which snapped the countless birds on their remote and unsafe island home from the air.

The 1.5 million penguins were spotted on the Danger Islands, a chain of nine rocky islands off the Antarctic Peninsula's tip, near South America.

The scientists used an algorithm to search images from the American Landsat spacecraft for sites of possible penguin activity.

According to experts, more than 1.5 million Adelie penguins have now been found on the Danger Islands. The team counted them up with an assist from a quadcopter drone.

The photos were then stitched together to give a comprehensive picture.

Once again, trained software was called upon to do the actual counting.

"Despite concerted worldwide effort to track and interpret shifts in the abundance and distribution of Adélie penguins, large populations continue to be identified", says the article.

Further study the supercolony will help the team better understand Adélies across the region."The population of Adélies on the east side of the Antarctic Peninsula is different from what we see on the west side, for example".

Researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution discovered a massive colony of over 1.5 million Adélie Penguins a species previously thought to be on the decline in Antarctica’s Danger Islands. Their study was released on March 2

Scientists suspect that decline has something to do with reductions in sea-ice, which is an important habitat for krill, the small crustaceans that form a key part of the penguin diet.

"It's hard to know the causes". It's not clear what the driver of those declines is yet; the candidates are climate change, fishing and direct human disturbance, but it does show the size of the problem.

She said the supercolonies have undetected for decades because of the remoteness of the islands and the treacherous waters that surround them.

"The Danger Islands appear to have avoided recent declines documented on the Western AP and, because they are large and likely to remain an important hotspot for avian abundance under projected climate change, deserve special consideration in the negotiation and design of Marine Protected Areas in the region", Lynch and colleagues wrote in the journal Scientific Reports. We want to understand why.

Dr Tom Hart, a researcher at Oxford's Department of Zoology, explained: "This was an incredible experience, finding and counting so many penguins".

"We were. very lucky to have a window of time where the sea ice moved out and we could get a yacht in", said Lynch.

"Modern satellites are fantastic tools for exploring and studying these hard-to-access places".
