Facebook Ends Explore Feed Experiment; Returns Proper News Stories To Six Countries

Facebook drops newsfeed experiment after it promoted fake news Facebook decides two separate news feeds is the wrong call
| 03 March, 2018, 00:35

It started the experiment in October 2017 in six countries - Bolivia, Guatemala, Cambodia, Slovakia, Serbia and Sri Lanka. The split feed was created to separate one's social life from the Pages they follow, moving posts from Pages into a News Feed that was separate from a feed containing statuses from friends and family.

Citizens in these countries saw posts from official news organisations removed from their own news feeds as part of a desire to focus on content written by friends and family.

Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled other changes to the Facebook News Feed in the past two months to fight sensationalism and prioritize posts from friends and family. Others don't and we drop them. Facebook says that it will act on this feedback by updating how it determines where it tests new products and features.

So far, users haven't liked the new Snapchat at all (though TechCrunch says downloads are actually up).

Users were only able to see posts from publishers in a separate feed, or in the main feed if the brand paid for the privilege. "Those changes mean less public content in News Feed like posts from businesses, brands, and media", the company added. A different version of the feed was available in the rest of the world, and it will also be discontinued this week.

However, FB soon found that people were less satisfied with the change and it didn't really help them connect more. The tech giant specifically said it would jettison its "Disputed Flags" program, which instituted indicator warnings for potentially fraudulent or misleading information in certain articles seen on the trending news sidebar or users' news feeds. Russian agents abused the platform with ads and organic posts that showed up on the news feed, in an attempt to sway the election and sow discord among Americans.

Today, we're ending one of those tests: "the Explore Feed". The option "Explore feed" then appears in a list.

Mosseri said the company had also 'received feedback that we made it harder for people in the test countries to access important information, and that we didn't communicate the test clearly'.
