Shehbaz Sharif elected as acting president of PML-N Shahbaz hails Sharif's role
| 01 March, 2018, 14:03

Pakistan's ruling PML-N party on Tuesday appointed Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif as its acting president after the current president, Nawaz Sharif, stepped down in the wake of a Supreme Court order barring him from holding the position.

PML (N) has once again demonstrated political maturity by amicably resolving the tickling issue of the leadership of the party following disqualification of Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as party head by virtue of a Supreme Court verdict.

Sharif hugged his younger brother, Shahbaz, after the latter's appointment as the interim president, who would be made permanent in the next couple of months.

Maryam Nawaz confirmed the development in a tweet as the PML-N Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting was underway at the Sharif family's Model Town residence in Lahore.

Nawaz also noted he was stripped of the PML-N presidency even though only the party's workers have the right to elect whomever they see fit to lead the party.

According to the party's rules, the PML-N's CWC is supposed to elect an acting party head within a week of its chief's removal. Then the party's general council is required to elect a president within 45 days. PML (N) is still expected to emerge as the biggest party in Senate.

Nawaz Sharif had already put his weight behind his younger brother for performing well in Punjab and keeping the party united by dint of his "exceptional qualities".

Nawaz Sharif referred to his disqualification and said that such decisions insulted the public mandate, which had become apparent in the form of millions of votes.

"The Election Commission of Pakistan must de-notify PML-N until the Supreme Court's decision of July 28 is intact".

Nawaz was disqualified as the prime minister by the apex court in the Panama Papers case in July previous year under Article 62 for failing to declare a receivable salary as an asset.

It also said that a person who is disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution is not eligible to sign on any document needed to nominate someone to the National Assembly or Senate.

However, he will not have any specific position in the party.
