The German goalkeeper broke a metatarsal in his left foot during a Champions League defeat to Real Madrid in April past year and suffered a repeat injury the following September.

He is all but certain to miss Wednesday's French Cup quarter-final against Marseille and the weekend's Ligue 1 visit to Troyes, with the Real clash just three days later.

This means, that not only will Neymar miss the Champions League round of 16 clashes against Real Madrid, but also any games played for the next month or so.

Neymar, who joined PSG for 222-million euro ($273.39 million) from Barcelona in the close season, posted a picture of his heavily bandaged ankle on Instagram earlier on Monday.

This will come as a huge blow to the French giants as they will now have to overturn the 1-3 reverse to Real Madrid in the Champions League without the mercurial forward.

"We're optimistic. For his participation in the match against Real, if I had to say yes or no, I would say yes".

Neymar's right ankle is severely sprained and there is a fracture on his fifth metatarsal.

Meanwhile, the doctor for the Brazil national teams, Rodrigo Lasmar, confirmed on Tuesday that he is en route to Paris to meet with Neymar and PSG team doctors.

Zidane, however, said on Monday: "I'm not happy with the Neymar injury and I hope he can be back for the game".

PSG is 14 points clear of second-place AS Monaco atop the Ligue 1 standings and could have its fifth title in six years wrapped up well before Neymar's potential return.

Madrid hold a 3-1 lead heading into the second leg of the last-16 tie at the Parc des Princes.

Neymar appeared to be targeted by Marseille throughout Sunday's Classique meeting, the Brazilian fouled on eight occasions, although he set up Edinson Cavani for PSG's third goal.

Emery told Le Parisien: "The first exams reveal a twist to the ankle".

"Neymar? Me, I saw only one thing is that I played the ball", Sarr said.
