North Korean envoy claims talks with USA possible

"President Moon pointed out the urgency to hold [a] dialogue between North Korea and the U.S.in order to. resolve the issues on the Korean Peninsula and to improve inter-Korean relations", according to the South Korean statement.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, one of the U.S. delegates and the White House spokesperson, told reporters during a press briefing Saturday in PyeongChang that the USA officials have "no planned meetings or interactions with North Korea".

North Korea has denied its involvement in the sinking.

At the closing of the Games, the United States was being represented by Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter and adviser.

Moon's presidential office announced the overture in a statement picked up by South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

On Sunday, North Korea called the new sanctions an "act of war".

Gen. Kim has been accused of orchestrating attacks on the Cheonan warship and Yeonpyeong Island in 2010, leading to the death of 46 South Korean sailors. A US embassy official said that all the delegates, including the NSC director, seem to be leaving on the same day. She has said the objective of her visit is to advocate maximum pressure on North Korea to halt its nuclear program.

Pence sat close to Kim Yo-jong, the North Korean leader's younger sister, and Kim Yong-nam, North Korea's ceremonial head of state, at the opening ceremony, but they had no interaction.

The general's visit comes shortly after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed "great satisfaction" over a visit to the Olympics opening ceremony by a high level delegation which included his sister Kim Yo Jong.

While Vice President Mike Pence led the USA delegation during the games' opening ceremony, the first daughter traveled to South Korea this week to head the team during its closing ceremonies.

Pyongyang denounced his comments Sunday, with KCNA carrying a statement from the North's Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee saying Pence would discover "what quagmire his insane remarks threw the United States and himself into".

The protesters also hung a sign that read: "We are against Pyongyang Olympics: fallen into the propaganda of the terrorist Kim Jong Un's brutal regime". He made the remarks during a meeting with South Korean president Moon Jae-in, who is eager to engage the North after one of the most hostile periods in recent years on the Korean Peninsula. Unlike Pence, Ivanka Trump was smiling as she turned in the North Koreans' direction.

In August, Trump threatened to go beyond sanctions by bringing "fire and fury like the world has never seen", although his administration has repeatedly said it prefers a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

The White House official added the "U.S".

Trump, it said, should know that the North would "have no dealings with those viciously slandering the dignity of our supreme leadership and government".
