1 dead in double stabbing at Winchester Public Library

Winchester police officials are seen in front of the Winchester library on Washington Street shortly after what is believed to be a double stabbing inside the library. One suspect has been taken into custody. Staff Woman, 22, is stabbed to death and a man, 77, is injured by suspect, 23, brandishing a 10-inch hunting knife inside Massachusetts library

She suffered multiple stab wounds to the head and upper torso and was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

University of New England President James Herbert said Stryker showed great promise as a first-year medical student.

Police say 23-year-old Jeffrey Yao approached Stryker from behind as she sat at a table in the library sometime after 10 a.m. Saturday. A 22-year-old woman was fatally stabbed by a man with a hunting knife inside the reading room of the library.

A young woman from Winchester is being remembered for her contributions to the community. Authorities haven't named Stryker as the victim of Saturday's stabbing that also left a 77-year-old man injured, but several family friends identified her as such to The Boston Globe at a Sunday service.

A day after the attack, one large question still loomed over the sudden burst of violence that shattered the tranquility of the town's library: Why?

Yao's neighbors told the Boston Herald he was aggressive and became more violent over the past few months.

Police are still investigating the killing. One neighbor told the newspaper he warned authorities that Yao would kill someone.

Leslie Luongo, another neighbour, told the Boston Globe that she would run to her auto each day when she left for work at 5am because she was afraid of Yao.

The library's director, Ann Wirtanen, announced in a statement posted on Facebook that the library will be closed "until at least Tuesday". He was charged with murder and assault and jailed without bail pending arraignment on Monday. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan says Yao was "known to police", but didn't go any further.

Neither she nor Winchester Police Chief Peter MacDonnell would provide additional details.
