AT&T says its mobile 5G service will launch first in parts of Dallas and Waco in Texas and in Atlanta, Georgia alongside additional cities to be announced in the coming months.

AT&T wireless announced on Tuesday the first cities to get its 5G network.

The company said it's keeping an "aggressive schedule" to bring the technology to fruition this year.

In today's Tech Bytes, the next generation of wireless technology. Mansfield said AT&T is working aggressively with vendors, so that it can start stocking shelves in 2019. Both hardware makers and wireless carriers need to closely time launching 5G devices and networks so the return on investment is maximized. "You have to put the network capabilities in place that you can put different services on top of".

Additionally, AT&T's mobile 5G rollout will operate over millimeter wave spectrum in some areas (it began to conduct 5G trials with millimeter wave spectrum in mid-2106), but also expects to provide mobile 5G using additional spectrum bands.

The race to 5G is competitive, as rival Verizon also plans on rolling out 5G networks in the near future as well. Verizon said it'll launch 5G in up to five USA markets in 2018, starting with Sacramento, Calif. Sprint said it will roll out 5G by the end of 2019.

The wireless giant previously said it would introduce the service to about a dozen US markets by late 2018, but it didn't specify which cities or a specific timeline.

AT&T previously launched test runs for the 5G network, but now the company plans to launch it nationwide by the end of the year. In fact, its 5G evolution features have been live on T-Mobile for a few years.
