MA confirms first death of child from flu-related illness

Almost 62,000 flu cases have been reported from October 1, 2017 to February 10, 2018, with 107 deaths.

The CDC also said some western states are seeing a second wave caused by Influenza B. People who have had the flu once can get sick again from a second strain.

Most illnesses this winter have been caused by a nasty kind of flu called Type A H3N2. The vaccination was only helpful in preventing 25 percent of H3N2 virus, and only 36 percent of flu virus overall. The strain also mutated while the vaccine itself was being developed, rendering the vaccines less effective than a typical flu vaccine.

Scientists are still trying to puzzle out why the vaccine was relatively ineffective this season. A study in Australia suggested the vaccine would be only about 10 percent effective against the H3N2 virus, and a preliminary study from Canada two weeks ago put that figure at 17 percent. "Influenza-related illness is identified and responded to using best practices". The flu vaccine does not contain active viruses and can not infect you. The antibodies provide protection against infection with the viruses in the vaccine.

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb explained in a statement Thursday that the flu virus has the ability "to change rapidly as it circulates", which makes it hard to develop an effective vaccine.

"They've all had the flu already, but there are other strains (of the flu) going around so as a precaution I brought them here today", Madero said. She was not involved in the CDC research. People must get a new vaccine every year to be protected. This is believed to work a little bit better in that age group. Approximately 3,440 hospitalizations have been reported since flu season began. Hospitalizations are also at record levels.

Welch says that he expects to see high rates of flu continue for the next several weeks. The nation as a whole exceeded this rate during the week ending November 25 and has remained at or above it - ranging as high as 7.7 percent - for 11 consecutive weeks.

Seasonal influenza has swept through the entire United States this year, with a total of 63 pediatric deaths recorded as of February 3.

As of Tuesday morning, 254 Livingston County residents had lab-confirmed cases of Influenza A, while 56 had lab-confirmed cases of flu B, according to Root.

CDC said the worst flu season of recent memory shows no signs of letting up any time soon.

Federal scientists say people should get vaccinated even though this year's shot hasn't been that effective, particularly against a nasty H3N2 strain.
