Google to discard 'view images' button from search results

Google removes the button “View Image” from Image Search Getty and Google Reach Settlement—Say Goodbye to 'View image' Button
| 17 February, 2018, 01:58

Having a single button that takes people to actionable information about the image is good for users, web publishers and copyright holders. "They are created to strike a balance between serving user needs and publisher concerns, both stakeholders we value", the company said in another tweet. But this morning it got a little less useful: in addition to making the reverse image search tool harder to find, the "Show Image" button has disappeared.

The deal comes after Getty lodged gripes with regulators in both the U.S. and Europe over Google Images. But now, with the removal of the option, Google now wants us to click on the "Visit" option, go to the source website, and right click on the image and only then save the picture. After testing a couple of searches last night, one of the images we saw in the results couldn't even be seen on the website we were linked to, anywhere. There are tons of public domain and creative commons images out there (like everything on Wikipedia, for instance), and lots of organizations are free to use many copyrighted images under fair use. "View Image" from developer Joshua Butt returns the button to the Google Images interface, restoring the direct link function that Google and Getty are apparently no longer interested in supporting.

You can no longer 'view image' on Google Images search results

"This is a awful idea... you find an image on Google Images only for the image to be nowhere in sight", said one user on Twitter. "We are pleased to announce that after working cooperatively with Google over the past months, our concerns are being recognized and we have withdrawn our complaint". Photo library Getty Images had complained to the European Commission past year, alleging that the search giant was into "anti-competitive practices". "The Visit button remains, so users can see images in the context of the webpages they're on", Google said in a tweet.

Fortunately, there's still at least one way around it, right click select open image in new tab or view image and you will still open up the full-size picture. This is a step Google is taking to help protect photographers' copyrights.
