Boris Johnson calls for safe return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar

EU Parliament delegation goes to Myanmar, as evidence of genocide spreads Myanmar Forces and Buddhist Villagers Torched Rohingya Homes, Then Killed Muslims
| 12 February, 2018, 02:20

The Myanmar government has faced worldwide accusations of waging an ethnic cleansing campaign in Rakhine, with almost 700,000 Rohingya fleeing the area since last August amid reports of atrocities committed by troops and vigilante groups.

"I want to see and hear for myself the awful things these people have been through, and I will be talking to State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and other regional leaders about how we can work together to resolve this appalling crisis".

Boris Johnson has urged Burmese authorities to carry out a full investigation into violence against Rohingya refugees.

Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) estimates 6,700 Rohingya died in the first month of violence.

We cannot help but ask, now that Rakhine Buddhists and Myanmar's security personnel themselves have come forward and substantiated evidence of the mass murder by the military and Buddhist villagers, how can Myanmar continue to deny the truth?

Police arrested two Reuters reporters, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, on December 12 for allegedly obtaining confidential documents relating to Rakhine and have accused them of violating Myanmar's Official Secrets Act. But the Nobel laureate has refused to change tack.

Many Rohingya say they do not feel safe returning to a country where they have faced decades of discrimination and have been denied them citizenship.

Neighbouring Bangladesh has agreed a timeframe with Myanmar for repatriating Rohingya people at a rate of 1,500 each week. They will visit Rohingya camps and meet worldwide NGOs working in the Rakhine State, Myanmar civil society organisations, religious and political leaders as well as the media.

The pair now face up to 14 years in prison on charges of possessing classified documents in violation of the colonial-era Official Secrets Act.

Buddhist villagers reported no rebel attack on security forces took place in Inn Din, and Rohingya witnesses told the news agency soldiers seized the 10 men from among hundreds of people who had sought safety on a nearby beach.

Johnson was expected to fly to Bangkok later on Sunday for a visit that will include meetings with Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and the Thai chairman of an advisory board on the Rohingya crisis.
