NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is making history again, this time one-upping the legendary Voyager 1.

NASA said in a statement that New Horizons snapped a picture of a group of stars known as the "Wishing Well" when the spacecraft was about 3.79 billion miles (6.12 billion kilometers) from Earth.

New Horizons was even farther from home than NASA's Voyager 1 when it captured the famous "Pale Blue Dot" image of Earth.

That picture was part of a composite of 60 images looking back at the solar system, on February 14, 1990, when Voyager was 3.75 billion miles from Earth.

Not long after that achievement in 1990, Voyager 1's cameras were switched off, but has since drifted endlessly into space for the past 27 years and will continue to do so for possibly millions of years.

Using the aforementioned LORRI tool, New Horizons managed to snap images of multiple Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs), as well as dwarf planets, including the 2012 HE85 and 2012 HZ84 KBOs shown in the image above. It finished its primary mission with the Pluto flyby in 2015 and is now on an extended mission to explore the Kuiper Belt, helping the United States to complete its reconnaissance of our solar system. About two hours later, New Horizons later broke the record again.

New Horizons is headed toward a KBO dubbed 2014 MU69, one of more than 20 far-off chunks of rock and ice NASA hopes to observe during the spacecraft's mission.

New Horizons was launched on January 19, 2006.

Most of the time, New Horizons is sleeping - hibernating, to save energy. It's not just taking awesome photos on its path, but also carrying measurements of the plasma, dust and neutral-gas environment along the way, enabling astronomers to better understand the outskirts of our solar system. "And now we've been able to make images farther from Earth than any spacecraft in history", mission principal investigator Alan Stern, a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute, said today in a news release.

When you're traveling through 700,000 miles (1.1 million kilometers) of space each day, nothing stands still.

The following is an excerpt from Wikipedia describing the New Horizons spacecraft. For now, New Horizons won't be sending home any snapshots.

New Horizons will fly about three times closer to MU69 than it did to Pluto in July 2015, allowing the spacecraft's cameras to provide a more detailed look at the object's surface. (Pluto is one of these dwarf planets.) 2014 MU69 is almost a billion miles beyond Pluto, which itself is 4.67 billion miles (7.5 billion km) beyond Earth.
