The Israeli army said a Palestinian stabbed a security guard at Karmi Tsur settlement near Halhoul, north of Hebron, before another guard shot him dead.

The wounded man was evacuated to the Hadassah University Hospital in Ein Karem.

There was no indication of a direct link between the two attacks, with violence common in the West Bank between Palestinians and Israeli settlers or security forces.

Hakim Asi, thought to be from Jaffa, reportedly stabbed Ben Gal on Wednesday afternoon at a bus stop outside Ariel, one of the largest Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

The Palestinian Maan news agency identified the stabber as Hamza Zamareh, 19, from the nearby Palestinian village of Halhul.

Local residents said that Israeli troops arrived at the family home shortly after the attack and began interrogating relatives, while young villagers hurled stones at the soldiers.

Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Monday that "it was only a matter of time before security forces close accounts with the murderer".

A Fatah spokesman, Osama Qawassmeh, said that death of Jarrar, who was killed in a shootout with the IDF, was "a type of field execution" and an Israeli "crime" that violated worldwide law.

Israeli forces were apparently on a one-month manhunt for Jarrar as they claimed he had masterminded the death of the Israeli.

Israeli forces had been hunting for the assailants since the murder, with roadblocks and checkpoints set up following the attack.

Tensions have risen in the West Bank since US President Donald Trump's December 6 recognition of Occupied Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Two Israelis have died in that timeframe.
