Maine's Flu Season is Bad and Peaking Right Now

For businesses, it means working on "social distancing", making sure people with flu-like symptoms stay at home. At the beginning of the year, the Department of Health reported that flu activity has increased around New Mexico-double what it was last year.

Tragically, the flu has killed more than 50 children this season and hospitalized other several thousands kids.

This year the flu is particularly serious, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announcing on January 26 that the flu activity has not yet peaked for the season. The surge in flu cases comes with additional news that a fourth person has died of flu-related complications in Delaware.

As of February 4 a year ago, there were just 669 cases of the flu and 109 hospitalizations.

While most who contract the flu virus may recover within a few days, some will go on to have a more severe case that could lead to hospitalization and even death.

Influenza-like illness continues to increase in DE, and across the nation.

If you still haven't gotten vaccinated during this brutal flu season, you still have time to protect yourself.

But the flu, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 37 children and 85 adults in the USA, can cause potentially fatal complications, for adults of any age.

He said the staff is taking every precaution against spreading the flu.

Medical professionals do say that those who have had sever allergic reactions to the flu shot in the past should not get it again, however.

Since October 1, 2017, 14,676 laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported through the Influenza Hospitalization Network.

- Fewer than half the countries, a lot of them in eastern Europe, recommended influenza vaccination for young children; vaccination coverage ranged from less than 1 percent to 80 percent.

The CDC's summary also reports that 17 children have died from the flu in this latest reporting period, but noted that one fatality took place in the 2015-16 reporting period. The Division is preparing a letter with recommendations on how to prevent and reduce the spread of the influenza virus that will be sent to schools and child care centers throughout the state.

The flu can be battled quite easily with some bed rest and medicine, but those who are over the age of 65, pregnant, or have chronic health problems may want to check in with their doctors, as they may need a different type of treatment such as antiviral medication.

"Vaccination is the most effective measure to prevent severe disease caused by influenza", Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe said.
