Google Readying Codename 'Yeti' Game Streaming Service, Possible Standalone Console

Google (Company) Quick Facts | Ubergizmo Report: Google developing a game streaming service codenamed 'Yeti' with console hardware
| 08 February, 2018, 01:02

It sounds very similar to Sony's own PlayStation Now, which makes PlayStation 3 and some PlayStation 4 games accessible through streaming. However, the company reportedly has plans for a subscription-based game streaming service that would possibly involve a Made by Google gaming console.

The service will be accompanied on the market by a "Made by Google" gaming console, but Yeti will also work on Chromecasts. The streaming service project is apparently codenamed "Yeti" which makes a lot of sense since Google's interests in gaming have been talked about but have yet to materialize. It would seem that gamers aren't really interested in paying for a streaming service where cloud-based gaming is the only hook, so Google will need to figure out an angle it can use to sell gamers on Yeti. It's now under development, under the code name Yeti, and that Google is putting quite a bit of investment into it.

With the gaming industry now valued at around $110 billion, it is no surprise that Google would want a bigger slice of the pie as figures continue to grow.

Google hired Phil Harrison, formerly of PlayStation and Xbox, last month which definitely adds some credibility to the claims that Google is going to take the multi-billion dollar games industry more seriously.

The console would avoid stepping on Nvidia's toes if it was low-spec'd enough to sit in between the Nvidia Shield and the Google Chromecast Ultra but - due to the bad blood between Google and Amazon - would likely be missing Amazon Video, available on the Nvidia Shield.

Game streaming services are still in their infancy, but it seems like things may be changing soon, with Google entering the picture with their own service.

We've reached out to Google for a comment on the existence of the games console and will update this article when we hear back.
